Rabies ad in today's Chronicle Herald

There's an ad that I noticed in the online edition of today's Chronicle Herald - about fictions about wildlife in Nova Scotia today - and one of them is about rabies -

http://www.gov.ns.ca/dhw/enjoytheoutdoors/

what it says is this -

Rabies
There is no rabies in Nova Scotia.

Fiction ––Rabies has been found here and bats are believed to be the
source of all rabies cases. Animals like skunks, raccoons, foxes and
even family pets can be at risk.

In the last 10 years, infected bats have transmitted rabies to two
foxes and a cat. In Canada, about 255 animals are found to have rabies
each year. Most cases are found in wild animals, especially bats,
skunks, raccoons, and foxes. Some cases are found in farm animals,
most commonly cows and horses; and some cases are found in pets,
especially dogs and cats.

There are a number of ways to keep your family and pet safe from rabies.

Protect pets from rabies:

1.Get your pet vaccinated. This is the best protection. In Canada, an
average of eight dogs and four cats get rabies each year. Pets also
need regular booster shots.
2.Keep dogs on a leash. Don’t let pets roam freely where there are wild animals.
3.Keep unvaccinated pets indoors.
4.Contact your veterinarian if your pet may have been bitten by another animal.

What do you take from that?

In the last TEN YEARS there have been THREE CASES of rabies in Nova Scotia.

Every year in Canada there are about TWO-HUNDRED FIFTY FIVE CASES of rabies CANADA WIDE.

What do you take from that?

THERE IS NO RABIES IN NOVA SCOTIA. YET.

There IS rabies in New Brunswick.

The rabies vaccine is very controversial - whether or not you should vaccinate every year. Or every 2 years. Personally I belong to the camp that says you should vaccinate when they are about 6 months old and then about 2 years - and then that's it - they're immune for life.

Vaccinating every year does nothing but kill your dog - and advertisements like the one put out by the Nova Scotia government today does nothing but monger fear unnecessarily.

3 cases in 10 years vs 255 cases a year does not mean we have rabies in Nova Scotia.

Vaccinate yearly at your own risk. And know your risks.

GGRRRRRRRR. I think I may be in a bad mood. Maybe it's because I think it's just another way that the government is trying to control me with subterfuge. Yuck. I don't like that. This is supposed to be shangri-la I'm living in. Don't fuck with that government of Nova Scotia.

  2. I hope so, too. Vaccinations are risky.
That one-sided, uninformed fear mongering is typical government. Looks like we'll have another coyote cull incentive this year again as well. Same kind of paranoia.

  3. I wondered why we had to inoculate them every year. What is the problem associated with the rabies shot Joan ?
