My small dogs are amazing and are no less or more temperamental then my big dogs nor do I let them get away with more. A lot is how you work with them. That's a broad generalization, but it applies in our household. I can do anything to the big dogs, including all sorts of things which might be painful (like cleaning a post-surgical wound, for example), and the big dogs just sit quietly.
