Stuff to do coming up

This is Buttercup today out enjoying the sun on the deck in the back yard - it was such a nice day! It is time to get out - I have officially put away my sensible shoes and brought out my flip flops.

So there's good stuff to do coming up - (in no particular order)

The Valley rescue H.A.R.T. is having a writing contest - you can win a 32 gigabyte ipod touch and you have to write an original story about an animal that has touched your life. It's open to people of all ages and there's no word limit. The cost to enter is $10, the contest closes June 1st, and they've set up a Facebook group so that you can get more information about the contest. If you're not into Facebook you can mail your entry directly to -

May 15th - the people who brought you Stopping Gail Benoit and Others Like Her will be holding a peaceful protest in Halifax in response to the fact that the Benoit's have moved their business to the Halifax area and are still using Kijiji to sell their wares even though their cases for animal cruelty are still moving their way through the Nova Scotia court system. "Come out, bring a sign, a coffee even your well mannered, leashed furry friend. All is welcome to stand together on this cause."

It doesn't say on the Facebook group where people are supposed to meet up - so I'm assuming as May 15th draws closer a meetup location will be disclosed on the Facebook website - so check there as the date gets closer.

As well on May 15th, the dog owners of Seaview Park are going to have a cleanup day at Seaview Park - they're hosting it from 9am to 12pm, so if you can show up sometime between those times for 10-15 minutes to help out, it would be sincerely appreciated - Chandler will give your dog's bum an extra special sniff, and so will his Mum!

Do you own a Dachshund? Wienerfest is looking for a spokesdog and hosting a photo contest! You can go to http://www.wienerfest.ca/ and find out more about it!

Happy Paws Canine Education will be hosting a Rally-Obedience Seminar and Trial the weekend of May 22-23, 2010 - "Rally Obedience goes beyond basic heeling by interspersing over forty obedience movements with the sits, turns and paces of traditional heeling. It also requires a brisk pace, positive attitude and happy demeanor" - rally-o is open to mixed breed dogs, unlike formal obedience stuff like CKC training. You can find out more and sign up by uploading a file at the Canuckdogs site - here -

Lab Rescue of Nova Scotia is having their "Big Doggy Doo" June 12th from 6 to 9pm at Shooters in Enfield in Nova Scotia - it's their annual dinner and auction, I've been to it before in previous years, and it's a ton of fun, so it's a good night out and it's for a great cause - labrador retrievers are everywhere and this rescue gets a ton of them.

The Nova Scotia SPCA has begun a new initiative called "Sponsor a Kennel Program" at their Dartmouth shelter - you can read more about it in a flyer that they've published at http://www.metro.spcans.ca/Sponsor%20A%20Kennel%20Program%20Flyer%20-%202010.pdf It sounds like a very good deal for a business looking to spend money philanthropically - "With your sponsorship, we will proudly display a plaque depicting your company’s name or an individual supporter to our monthly traffic of over 1,750 visitors/customers (approx. 20,000 people annually)on one of the 36 cat and 12 dog kennels located in both our cat and dog adoption rooms at our shelter. We will also provide a certificate for you to display at your company, showing your support. The cost of this sponsorship program is just $1/day for 365 days. You can find out more about it at http://www.metro.spcans.ca/

Watch out as well for the NS SPCA dog jog - they've put it off until September, but that's because they want it to be big and beautiful - so hopefully it's going to be a big deal, with lots of fun stuff to do - it's going to be lots of fun.

If you hear about anything fun coming up, let me know so we can share the love.

  3. I found your blog because I was following the Brindi story, which has since blown all out of proportion. I come back to Dogkisser to see your fluffs instead, like lovely little Buttercup, who looks like my own little "Ninja", a Bichon Frise. Big sweet wonderful eyes...

Write whatever you want. I'll keep coming back, because I'm a fan!

  4. Not about this post but I just found your link to the web cam at Peggy's Cove. I set it at 2 sec refresh & enjoy watching the surf in slow motion! (Looks like it's flip-flop weather there too.) Love your blog Joan & wouldn't miss it (and we're Cat People!)
